Biography
Petr Johan Marek (b. 1978) is a contemporary Czech painter based in Brno whose work explores the intersection of minimalism, color-field abstraction, and gestural expressionism. Known for a style that is both "resplendent and profound," Marek utilizes oil and acrylic on traditional supports—including canvas, wood, and paper—to create multi-layered compositions defined by rich textures and striking color contrasts.
Marek’s practice is characterized by an "artistic polyphony," seamlessly interweaving the meticulous patience of pointillism with the exuberance of Pop Art and the purity of minimal forms. His creative process is deeply cyclical, often described as "varying with the seasons of the year." This rhythmic approach allows him to return to specific series and palettes, orchestrating a visual symphony that mirrors his emotional response to the natural world and the human condition.
Critics, including Carol Wood of Art2Arts, have noted that Marek’s seemingly simple designs entice the viewer to look beneath the surface to discover an intricate, underlying nature. His non-objective explorations serve as a portal to the sublime, aiming to evoke a deep sense of tranquility, unity, and "epic serenity." For Marek, art is a vital vessel for connection; he views his canvases as sacred conduits intended to help the beholder traverse the labyrinth of human experience and find sanctuary in the abstract.
To date, Marek has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions across the Czech Republic. His work has gained significant international recognition and is held in private collections spanning the globe, including the United States, Japan, Australia, the United Arab Emirates, and throughout Europe.
