  • Varnishing “Early Winter in Utah”

One of my favorite final steps—varnishing a finished oil painting. It’s that magical moment when the colors come to life all over again! Varnish not only protects the painting from dust, UV rays, and moisture, but it also brings back the depth and richness that can get lost as oil paint dries. This layer gives the painting a unified finish—whether it’s glossy, satin, or matte—and makes all the hard work feel complete. It’s also a good moment to pause and appreciate the journey each piece takes from start to finish.

Some days the ideas flow like a river… other days, I just sit and stare at a blank canvas. Creating art isn’t always easy—it takes patience and persistence. There’s mess, there’s doubt, and sometimes a painting goes through five different skies before it feels right. But in the middle of all that, there’s joy. That feeling when the brush moves just the way I imagined. That quiet moment when colors start to tell a story. Art is how I process life. It’s how I breathe a little slower and notice the world around me. And no matter what the day brings, I keep showing up—one brushstroke at a time.
