    2014 Highly Commended Arts, Design and Media - Olena Kosenko

    When I first arrived in Australia from Ukraine, everything was unfamiliar — the language, the culture, even the art supplies had different names. I felt like I was starting from scratch. I knew I wanted to continue pursuing my passion for art, but I also had to learn English at the same time. It was overwhelming, but I was determined. Enrolling at TAFE WSI was a turning point for me. It wasn’t just a place to study — it became a place where I found support, encouragement, and a sense of belonging. The teachers were incredibly patient and understanding. They saw my potential even when I doubted myself. I still remember staying up late translating class materials and practicing my pronunciation, just trying to keep up. Over time, things started to click. My confidence grew as my English improved, and I began to thrive in my studies. In 2014, I was honoured to be named the Highly Commended Student in Arts, Design and Media. That recognition meant the world to me — not just because of the award itself, but because it reflected how far I had come. Thanks to the recommendation and support of my teachers, I was offered a job straight after finishing my course — my dream job. I now teach art to children, helping them express themselves through creativity just as I learned to do. It’s incredibly rewarding to inspire young minds and share the joy of making art. Looking back, I’m proud of every challenge I faced. TAFE WSI didn’t just help me build a career — it helped me build a new life.
