About Meliq Khazaryan
Biography
Born December 11, 1955, Yerevan, Armenia
Melik Kazaryan is an Armenian painter whose artistic journey reflects both deep cultural roots and a strong individual vision. He was born in Yerevan to parents from Ahnidzor, a village in the Lori region. His passion for fine art emerged early during his school years, inspired and guided by the renowned painter and sculptor S. Yukhanyan, who prepared him for a professional path in the arts.
Kazaryan took his first professional steps in 1974, entering the Terlemezian Art College. While studying there, he actively participated in pan-Soviet exhibitions and received several honorary diplomas. In 1979, he continued his education at the Yerevan State Institute of Art and Theatre (now the Academy of Fine Arts), marking a new stage in his artistic development.
Reaching artistic self-recognition, Kazaryan formed his own distinct genre and visual language. Although the Soviet totalitarian system restricted artistic freedom, it could not prevent the evolution of his creative path. His work was influenced by medieval writers and philosophy, particularly their interpretations of love and womanhood.
Kazaryan’s paintings are distinguished by strong, sculptural forms that lend mystery and monumentality to female figures. His early works reflect Impressionist tendencies, while later compositions reveal a rich, expressive palette inspired by the imagery of his native village. His artistic approach incorporates constructive elements of Surrealism, characterized by delicate details and intense, vibrant colors.
The artist is currently working on a series titled “New,” in which he celebrates femininity and beauty through powerful images of young women. The uniqueness of these works lies in their balance of monumentality and refined sensitivity.
Melik Kazaryan has exhibited widely in Armenia and abroad. His first exhibition in 1984 attracted significant attention from Soviet artists, and many of his works have since been featured and reviewed in international cultural magazines.
