About Jo Kemp

  • Biography

Jo Kemp was born in West Yorkshire, England, yet has spent much of her life immersed in the vibrant cultures of Asia and Europe. These rich and diverse cultural experiences have shaped her dynamic and entrepreneurial creative career.

As a visual artist and photographer, her work is as eclectic and diverse as her life experience. Multiple fine art photography series share threads of exploring connection, freedom, spirituality, and a love of process, movement, and color — constants in her work.

Impossible to be tied into one particular genre, she has a passion and commitment to documenting reality in social documentary photography, creating visual stories that speak to her experience of growing up in a northern town. She then crosses the bridge into experimental and imaginary realms, where she dives into philosophical concepts and personal story, drawing from her background in somatic movement and meditation,  making imagery that is often vibrant, emotive and experimental.

¨I am interested in creating imagery that has a pulse and vitality and some of what I find beautiful can be also strange in some way, I try to move in the direction of  the unknown and love an  unpredictable outcome, I want to capture the energy of  a thing and what  lies beneath the more obvious  form¨

She currently divides her time between the UK, Spain, and Portugal. Much of her work is created on the road, in between places, seeking out stories and building on  various bodies of work.
