About Jixiang Dong
Biography
Dong Jixiang is a contemporary landscape painter whose work centres on light, colour, and atmosphere. With over forty years of artistic practice, he approaches landscape not as a fixed location, but as a shifting field of tone, space, and emotional resonance.
Originally trained in oil painting, Dong developed a disciplined sensitivity to structure and spatial balance early in his career. Over time, his focus evolved toward the subtle transitions of light and the expressive potential of colour. His recent works, created during extended periods in the United Kingdom, respond to the changing light of British countryside and seasons.
Rather than pursuing literal realism, his paintings explore the atmosphere of a place — the quiet tension between sky and land, the diffusion of light at dusk, the weight of air before rain. Through layered brushwork and restrained colour relationships, he constructs compositions that feel both grounded and luminous.
Working between China and the UK, Dong continues to refine a contemporary visual language shaped by observation, memory, and the emotional presence of landscape.
