About J R Root

  • Biography

I am a visual artist originally from rural South Leicestershire, now based in Sherwood, Nottingham. My work explores the relationship between vibrant colour and emotion, aiming to bring both fervency and honesty to my subjects. I am interested in how we consume and engage with imagery in the digital age; how fleeting visual interactions shape our perceptions and emotional landscapes. My paintings seek to reflect this dynamic, balancing the immediacy of contemporary visual culture with the depth and presence of portraiture.

I have exhibited my work across the UK and have been fortunate to have my paintings held in private collections around the world. I have also received multiple awards, including the Two Queens Prize (2020) and the LCB Depot Prize (2021) and appeared on Sky Art’s Portrait Artist of the Year (2023).
