[💡How to paint realistic portraits with acrylics by Hsin Lin ] -{Part 3} Quote from original article- Step 6 - Blending the colour For the realistic flowers, I use thin liner brushes to outline the silhouette with a darker tone, then switch to a round soft brush with a lighter tone on it, and quickly smooth the outline colour with a lighter tone while the paint is half dry. This will create the gradient effect. It also gives a perfectly smooth blend of the flower petals this way. Artist’s tips and hints Take a break Your eyes might become tired and confused by working on the intricated composition for a long time. To avoid confusion at any stage, this is what I do - put an arrow or any mark on the centred petal that you want to start with. So anytime you come back to painting you know where to start. Rest and look at your work from afar Rest whenever you feel tired, painting with tired eyes might result in a colour combination you didn’t want or disorderly composition. A good way other than resting, is to have a walk outside looking at the view far away or under the natural sunlight, in order to balance the vision. Hsin Lin is a contemporary nature artist living in Melbourne. For Hsin, painting is a form of meditation where she often reflects and finds meaning in her everyday life. Special thanks to Mont Marte Art for the invitation and featuring my self- portrait & the interview. My great pleasure to have your love and support.💕 Quote from original article - [🏆How to paint realistic portraits with acrylics by Hsin Lin ] Contemporary nature artist Hsin Lin is stepping us through how to paint realistic portraits with acrylics. Hsin’s added her signature florals to the artwork, so you can also learn a thing or two about painting realistic flowers too. This artwork is called “Poise and Pride.” In April 2018, it was awarded the ‘Highly Commended Acrylic’ in The Hut Gallery Open Award Exhibition. The goal of my art journey has always been to stay true to myself and be true to the present moments. In this work, I decided to add in the flowers from my front yard - peony stands for honour, and bush lily stands for good luck. In order to capture the details in this artwork, it actually took me several months to re-reconnect to myself mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. I absolutely enjoyed painting these photo-realistic flowers, sometimes I even have dreams full of beautiful, delicate flower petals after a long day in the studio, which is totally worth it. I always want to deliver an important message in my floral series. Now is the very best time to be alive. Be at the moment, be yourself. Whenever you are experiencing difficulty, life itself can be bloomed like flowers with no fear. Step 1 - Overall Sketch for composition In the preliminary sketch, I try to keep this step simple and brief, but definitely think through the overall composition. I use black watercolour pencils and a HB pencil over the undertone for the shadow and the leaves’ layout. The reason I used watercolour pencils for drafting, is because it blends in well, with no sketching trace left once the second layer of paint is applied. Or it can be easily removed with a little bit of water. Step 2 - Drafting the feature proportion and flower petals in detail Now it’s time to sketch in the detail. In this painting, the major object that I wanted to point out, is the specific peony roses and the bush lilies. Because the flower is made up of many layers of petals, these need to be sketched as detailed as possible in this stage. As the layout had been decided as the firmed line in step 1, draw the silhouette of the petals of each flower precisely and find where the light comes from. Sketch the and leaves on the background, pencil and eraser are used in this step. If you want a more clean-finished result, apply another layer of varnish spray. Or what I do is I brush another thin layer of diluted gesso and let dry for a day. Step 3 - Starting with the background colour Start with Burnt Sienna, mixed with Titanium white in the process to create the depth of background. Step 4 - Background Leaves- grevillea, the flower of courage. More layers of green tone are added to the background and now we have the line and shape of the leaves established. Grevillea is one of my favorited trees. I adore the beauty of it every day I walk into the woods near my studio. Grevillea stands for strength and courage, this is exactly what I would like to express in this piece. Step 5 - Start the main section of the flower Now comes to the main part, I have a special size 4 round Sable Brush that I kept for more than 20 years, works wonder on the flower details. Structured acrylics are used here, sometimes I mix the colour with impasto medium for textured and non-transparency purposes. When it comes to the main flowers, I start with darker tone and then blended in white for a lighter tone which is added gradually step by step, so the colour hue would stay in harmony as a whole for the painting. Then more white is added in where the light sits. Stay tune on tomorrow's post for the rest if the steps :) Hope everyone's having a wonderful day & enjoy ! Warm Regards from HSIN LIN

{Official Launch for my 265th artwork } Drum-roll for this beauty - After 10 months of staying on my easel, this gorgeous is ready for the world! The artwork painted extends to all Side panels. D rings and wire are attached at the back. Comes with a certificate of authenticity. Sealed with clear varnish. 76.2 (W) x 121.9 cm (H) x 3.5 cm (D) Affirmation: Let me be your sunshine on a rainy day, in the darkest hours, every day to shine your day. I started this artwork around Dec 2021. It’s been a long journey, sunny days and rainy days. Long working hours required determination and faith to be achieved. The process wasn’t an easy task but It’s a challenge that I enjoyed, and I am happy to say I finally have it completed around September 2022. By the time I have this artwork completed, I decided to name this artwork - A Lifetime Sunshine, which is an extension of my previous artworks – A Life Time Journey, A Life Time blessing, A Life Time Commitment, A Life Time Love, A Life Time Story and A Life Time Grit. I present you the latest piece from my award-winning/signature series -Bloom like flowers. To experience the changing of the seasons and to present moments, it has become a routine of mine to paint the first bloom in my surrounding during its flowering season. This artwork was inspired by my visit to Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria in Cranbourne. I was drawn immediately to this particular Flowering Gum tree- Corymbia Ficifolia (Baby Orange) in bloom in the flowering season, one of the main reasons that I always come back to the Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria. In this particular artwork, there are flowers in full bloom gloriously under the sunlight, flowers in the blooming stage, as well as with closed buds most rounded and showing colour and buds with caps lifting on ready to bloom. Those are metaphor for all the precious moments in lifespan development. Eucalyptus flowers also have the symbolic meaning of Healing and Protection. The flower always blooms in its own time without competing with other flowers. May we all bloom in our time in the best season. Hope you enjoy this artwork of mine. Artwork inspired by nature at Royal Botanic Garden, Cranbourne, Spring, 2022. -HSIN LIN Corymbia ficifolia A Western Australian native tree with several small outlying populations further to the East, grows on sandy soils in low-lying areas of woodland. Corymbia Ficifolia -Baby Orange, belongs to the family- MYRTACEAE. A small Australian flowering gum growing to around 3-4m tall. One of the most outstanding flowering trees in Australia with conspicuous flowers in vermillion-orange that cover the canopy in summer, followed by large woody fruits known as honkey nuts. The brilliant orange flowers in summer bring the birds into the garden. A gum tree for every garden, the eucalyptus flowers for everyone. -Bloom like flowers - Hsin Lin’s series Bloom Like Flowers explores the process of blooming and our connection to nature. The signature series features meticulously detailed acrylic paintings and prints that celebrate native Australian flora and wildlife and highlight the ecologies and habitats that support and connect them. Hsin Lin’s professional background in fashion design informs her skill and ability to capture the organic textural details of these subjects. Through sensitive observation and illustration every petal, facet or filament is rendered on canvas. {Press Update} This particular artwork - A Lifetime Sunshine (2022)- is featured in the project - Blossoms of Life - The Eucalyptus Flower For Everyone.
