About Grama Gabriel

  • Biography

    Hello, I'm Gabriel Grama

My work is a thorough exploration of myths, human archetypes, and spirituality. I blend figures from ancient Greece, Byzantine tradition, Romanian pagan rituals, and Balkan folk art into dreamlike compositions that speak of ascent, struggle, and the search for light. Horses, mythical beings, and humans populate my canvases, each telling a story of transformation and inner strength or of fall and destruction.

These pieces that you are about to discover, are filled with complex shapes and bodily interconnection that invite the viewer to analyze each and every little detail in order to uncover the little stories and subsequently, the bigger picture of life.

For most of my artwork I use acrylic colours on canvas after I outline the forms of my subjects with charcoal. I also experiment with coloured pens on hard paper and canvas, a technique I adapted during the pandemic because it was convenient at the time.

    Event: ”Ονειροβασίες”-Dream Ascensions

    Dates: 14 Mar 2025 - 8 Apr 2025

    Venue: Artshot Gallery, Athens

The series “Dream ascensions” invites the viewer to dive into a world of dreams and fantasy, with a sense of ascent and wandering. The works, approximately 30 in number, are created using the classic technique of acrylic colors on canvas and have a strong dreamlike and surrealistic character. The flowing colors and the abstract human shapes surrounding the ships, the animals, and the landscapes create a sense of movement and chaos, as if everything is caught in a turbulent sea of dreams.

“There are many people, fantastically stacked, gathering in allegorical structures and expressive compositions. Naturally, this observation doesn’t shock but captivates—it is the key to unlocking the grandeur of Gabriel Grama’s painting. The characters are not lined up repetitively, inert, but individually participate in the expression and the message. They move as if there’s no gravity, like angels, gathering in currents and vortices that paint themselves.”

Event: ''People - Rise or Fall''

    Dates: 9 Apr 2019 - 11 May 2019

Venue: Ena Contemporary, valaoritou 9g Athens

Gabriel Grama’s exhibition "People - Rise or Fall" presents to the public a series of large and medium-sized works that were created in 2017-2018. The technique in most works is acrylic on canvas. The artist performs an "assemblage" game using thousands of human and animal figures, creating a special collage, a mosaic whose pieces are faces, ancient statues, kores and kouroi, horses, ascension scenes, struggle and anguish scenes, mythical beings and animals.
The artist uses at the basis the sculptural form, to which he adds minimal color, preferably blue and dark blue.
A basic source of inspiration is ancient Greece with its stories, myths as well as the Romanian pagan customs of the New Year, the rhythms and the traditional art of the Balkans and the Middle East.

    Event: Primitivismo Contemporaneo

    Dates: 4 Oct 2016 - 10 Oct 2016

Venue: Oratorium place, Via Romana 40, Florence

[...] The artist states that ‘’ Contemporary primitivism work constitute my effort to express my opposition to what modern society has offered and presented in the recent years. My 50 paintings , mainly medium sized canvasses , or some even bigger , were produced in the years 2010-2015 . Influenced by the Balkan folklore, mainly the Romanian , the folk art of Middle East and North Africa , I combine schematic elements with decorative coloring in my distinctive penmanship. A lot of automizations and ways of expressions easily identified in my paintings , stem from the Byzantine religious painting , which I studied for years in Greece ‘’.

All things considered , behind the technology and the stifling world of our day and age , the human beings of Gabriel Grama despite their evolution , have the same primitive instincts and the same needs, regardless of their origin with the result of becoming themselves a universal symbol.
