    February in the South of France. The studio is heated — though nobody said anything about Hawaii. This is what came out of that. The weight of a dark mass, a horizon that can't quite make up its mind; and then, a signature. Because at some point, you decide the painting is done. Some paintings are made despite the conditions. This one could only have been made because of them.

    Studio doors open, summer light flooding in. The paintings finally on the wall. This is the moment every series works toward: when the work stops being yours alone and starts belonging to the room. The glasses are round. The hair has opinions. The paintings, mercifully, speak for themselves.

    "Sea Reine"

    "Sea Reine"

    Between two canvases, a paintbrush in hand — this is where I live. My studio is in the South of France, where the light is generous and the Mediterranean is never far. The sweater? A little franglais for "queen of the sea" — but say it out loud in French and you get sirène. Mermaid. A nod to another passion that feeds the work. The horizon, the wind, the movement of water. It all ends up on the canvas eventually.
