About Elliot Roworth

  • Biography

I am an artist based in St Kilda, Melbourne, working in oil paint to explore city scenes, seascapes, and floral still life. My practice is rooted in a fascination with the familiar undergoing a transformation through the play of light and colour.

Coming from a background in architecture, I developed an artistic understanding for design principles and precision drawing. I love the tension that forms when controlled structure meets expressive, even chaotic, gesture. This push and pull between accuracy and spontaneity gives my paintings their energy - the balance between order and freedom.

Oil paint allows me to shift fluidly between delicate, wash-like transparency and rich, sculptural impasto. Its malleability keeps the work alive throughout the painting session, whether I’m working en plein air or building colour and texture in the studio.

A year of travel through vibrant and luminous places has deepened my relationship with colour; Australia’s heat and light continue to drive me toward bold, elevated palettes. By amplifying colour, sometimes beyond realism and toward abstraction, I aim to express not just what I see, but how the environment feels to be in.

I have been fortunate to experience a renewed connection to beauty in the familiar through the work of a great number of talented and inspiring artists. I aspire for the audience of my artwork to encounter that same shift in perception so they may unlock a new appreciation for the everyday.

    Thank you for reading!
