About David Block

  • Biography
I’ve been in Animation for almost 50 years, and decided to explore painting as I transitioned into retirement. As a Disney Features Animator, I was a constant observer of living things and how they move. And now I love to observe and try to capture the way the light plays on the world around us. As I begin a painting, I'm always focused on capturing the light. The artists who inspire me now are the California Impressionists and others like Frederick Judd Waugh and Wilhelm Ritschel. I am originally from Cincinnati, Ohio, and moved to Los Angeles in 1973 to attend art school. Although I attended art school for 4 years in Chicago and Los Angeles, I am primarily a product of mentorships. The act of setting the pencil down and picking up a brush for the first time came about in 2012 when I took my first painting class. The teacher was immediately very encouraging. Since then, I have taken a workshop with California artist, Kathleen Dunphy, and studied under Master Landscape painters Kenn Backhaus and Matt Smith. I have had a one man show in Burbank, California, won an Honorable Mention Ribbon from California Art Club President/Judge, Peter Adams, and participated in Art Shows in Santa Barbara and Malibu Creek State Park. My paintings have sold through my website to customers as far away as The Netherlands.
