About Clement Mohale

  • Biography
Clement Mohale is a contemporary artist whose work is defined by bold color, expressive figures, and emotionally charged narratives. Working primarily with oils and acrylics, he employs textured brushwork, impasto layers, and striking contrasts of light and shade to create paintings that are both vivid and deeply evocative. His distinctive use of monochrome blue to depict subjects has become central to his practice, symbolizing resilience, memory, and hope. Much of Mohale’s work centers on children, whose unspoken stories and powerful gazes capture the intersection of innocence and endurance. By pairing these figures with vibrant backgrounds and symbolic colors, he creates a dialogue between vulnerability and strength, silence and expression, past and present. Inspired by everyday lived experiences, social realities, and the human capacity to overcome adversity, Mohale’s art sheds light on themes such as poverty, inequality, displacement, and perseverance. His paintings serve not only as visual records but as emotional archives, inviting viewers into a shared space of reflection, empathy, and resilience. Through his practice, he transforms personal and collective struggles into bold affirmations of humanity and hope.

    The Lockdown Collection Portfolio Finalist

An art initiative founded in 2020 to capture South Africa’s historic Covid-19 lockdown and support vulnerable artists.
Like so many other things in our current Coronavirus world, the world of art and artists is reeling from the shock waves of this global crisis. At the same time, we are more in need of art than ever, of ways to reflect and interpret the space that we find ourselves in.
The Lockdown Collection (TLC) is a 48-hour-idea-to-launch initiative formed by Sirdar Group, MRS WOOLF and Artist Proof Studio to capture the reality of the Pandemic with and through visual artists. Through the sale of these historic artworks, funds are raised for the newly created Vulnerable Artists Fund (VAF) and these funds are dispersed to keep artists in South Africa sustained and active in their lives and the ongoing creation of their work.
The initiative has raised over R3.5Million in just over a year and counting and has paid out over 500 grants and bursaries

    2020

    Green Recovery Portfolio Finalist

The project reflects on strategies to instill hope and to envision climate governance that recognizes a sharing of the benefits and burdens of the transition to net zero carbon. The project included the launch of a South African Visual Art Exhibit and sale of the art of winners of a competition held in collaboration with the University of Johannesburg and Artist Proof Studio among South African art students for print designs on climate change and a hopeful vision for a ‘green recovery’ of our economies. This also included the release of a new virtual choir song titled Time for Hope, in a collaboration between the Canada Climate Law Initiative and Live Canon, with voices and pledges from around the world.

    2007

    Managers Choice Award

The accolade was awarded to me as a result of my outstanding creative work in the Cashbuild Art At HeArt Community Competition run in partnership with local primary schools.

Exhibiting at The Pencil Club marked a significant moment in my artistic journey. The Pencil Club, with its 360-degree views of Durban and its reputation as a platform for visionaries and collectors, provided the perfect stage to share my voice as a contemporary artist.

Through these elements, I explored themes of resilience, memory, and identity, reflecting both personal and collective experiences. For me, this opportunity was not only about exhibiting paintings but about creating a dialogue between Africa’s rich artistic heritage and a contemporary reimagining of its stories. Exhibiting here reminded me of the importance of keeping the narrative alive, one that speaks of strength and hope.

My first solo exhibition at the North-West University (NWU) Gallery in 2020 unfolded during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic; a time when the world was marked by fear, loss, and uncertainty. In the midst of that global crisis, I felt compelled to create work that celebrated the beauty of the African continent and the culture of its people, offering a sense of hope and resilience.

Through my signature use of monochrome blue, bold contrasts, and textured brushwork, I explored themes of identity, memory, and strength. Each painting became both a reflection of personal and collective struggle, and a tribute to the endurance of African spirit and tradition.

For me, this exhibition was more than a presentation of artworks; it was an act of survival, healing, and connection at a time when the world needed to be reminded of resilience, unity, and the enduring power of culture.
