About Cat Goward
Biography
I was introduced to painting at the age of four by my grandmother, who first placed a brush in my hand. Many formative hours were spent in her studio, where I learned to experiment freely and explore different techniques and materials. Her early guidance sparked a lifelong connection to art.
A recent trek through Nepal’s Annapurna range reignited that creative passion. The dramatic mountain landscapes—alongside past travels through the Andes, and Alps—now form the heart of my work. These vast, dramatic landscapes deeply inform my mountain compositions. Closer to home, the glowing skies over the Kent coast—where J.M.W. Turner once painted— inspired a series of luminous sunrises and sunsets.
Working primarily in oil on canvas, my approach is intuitive and process-driven. I mix colours directly on the surface, layering thick and thin applications of paint to build texture, depth, and atmosphere. Bold colour and expressive mark-making allow me to capture the shifting moods of the landscapes.
I divide my time between my studio in Crystal Palace, South London, and the coastal village of Birchington in Kent—where my grandmother first taught me to paint—and continue to evolve my landscape series.
