About Brooke T Ryan

  • Biography

Brooke views life as a collection of fleeting moments to be cherished. Photographing since the mid-1980s, her work captures these moments throughout the seasons: Leaves budding, unfurling, changing color, and then falling, birds building nests, raising young, and migrating, the brief appearance of shadows on sunny days, and the stark beauty of bare trees reflecting on water after the ice melts. She covets the ephemeral, amorphous forms of clouds and the ebb and flow of water.

All of this can be seen and captured with cameras, but humans are only capable of seeing some of the light emitted by the sun, specifically visible light. All cameras contain a filter that blocks other light - ultraviolet and infrared - enabling photographs to reflect how humans see the world. Brooke had that filter removed, her full-spectrum and infrared photographs now revealing a realm that extends beyond our vision, recognizable yet with an ethereal glow and an altered color palette, prompting us to pause and notice aspects of the world around us that we all too often overlook, inviting us to slow down and consider what is beyond what we see and perceive.

Brooke's photography has been exhibited across the USA, is on book covers, is sold by major retailers, and is in homes worldwide.

Event: Earth - Water - Sky

    Dates: 1 Jun 2024 - 30 Jun 2024

Venue: Cazenovia Public Library, Cazenovia, New York, USA

Solo exhibition: As a youth growing up in Cazenovia, Brooke spent days out in nature with a camera and nights searching the night sky with a telescope. Today, her photographic art serves as a reminder of what we must preserve here on Earth. She often combines the pursuits of her youth to create photo composites, juxtaposing the starry night sky with landscapes and seascapes to illustrate the sense of calm it evokes and to remind us of its eternal presence.
While Brooke cherishes the colors of changing seasons, she also appreciates the monochromatic effect snow has on the landscape. She is drawn to photograph nature’s more subtle beauty, extracting and enhancing using experimental techniques and during post-processing.
Brooke's photos have been in juried exhibitions around the country. She has been selling her photographic art online since 2011 and you can find it at major retailers including Macy’s, Wayfair, and Target, as well as on book covers.
