About Amrish Malvankar

  • Biography
I’m Amrish Malvankar—an architect by training and an artist by calling. After graduating from Sir JJ School of Architecture in Mumbai, I spent years immersed in the world of design, structure, and form. But it was in 2008 that I fully turned to painting, allowing my creative process to unfold freely and fully on canvas. My background in architecture deeply informs the way I see and build my compositions. Structure, balance, and precision are always present, but I approach them intuitively—letting each painting guide me as I work through it, layer by layer. I connect with every piece I create on a personal level; it's never just about making something look beautiful—it's about feeling my way through an idea until it finds its form. Over time, I’ve grown more experimental—with color, with medium, with process. I don’t restrict myself to a single technique or palette. I enjoy pushing the limits, blending unexpected materials, and finding new ways to evoke emotion and texture through surface and stroke. This openness allows each painting to take on a life of its own. What matters most to me is the relationship the viewer has with the work. I’m not trying to impose a fixed story or message. Instead, I want the viewer to feel something genuine—something that’s their own. My hope is that the painting becomes a quiet space for reflection, where color, form, and feeling interact in deeply personal ways. There’s a balance I constantly search for in my art—between strength and softness, between control and surrender. Delicate strokes often sit beside bold gestures, just as moments of calm coexist with bursts of intensity. For me, this tension mirrors life itself: layered, unresolved, and yet somehow whole. Painting has taught me that every person carries within them an artistic sensitivity. If my work helps someone access that—if it slows them down, makes them feel, or offers a moment of stillness—then I feel I've done my part.
