About Alex Mensah

  • Biography
I am Alex Mensah (Lexis), a Ghanaian artist, versatile in color schemes and very meticulous in the execution of my works. My interest for art was built up while growing up as a child. My elder brothers' drawings and sketches amused me so much that, I picked pieces of papers and tried hard to copy some of the compositions that fascinated me most. That is how my painting journey, all began. I am a product of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) - Ghana, and graduated with a second class honors (upper division) - pursing B.A (Art) and majoring in painting. My art celebrates the depth and beauty of African culture through vibrant color, movement, texture and emotion. I seek to capture the soul of African life: its rhythm, resilience and quiet beauty. Each piece reflects moments of strength, grace and quiet reflection, especially through the spirit of women who shape their communities. Using expressive brushstrokes and bold tones, I aim to capture both the rhythm of tradition and the pulse of modern identity. My work invites viewers to connect with stories of heritage, humanity and timeless power of creation. I try not to limit myself to a particular style of painting, I allow my innermost feeling towards the theme I am working on, dictate how it should be expressed - cutting across realism, abstract, semi -abstract, landscapes etc. Being a guitarist, I sometimes see my paintings as songs, where I use color to depict the various sol-fa's and pitches, and then texture to control the tempo of the song I am painting. I love to work with acrylics on canvas and occasionally work in oils too. Other times, I use "aciduro" (a brown local pigment) on canvas, which comes with a new feel and lovely watercolor effects. I draw inspiration from numerous sources and themes; music, lived experiences, unspoken poetry of everyday life, village rhythms, street scenes, etc. and love to transfer knowledge to young learners worldwide. Hope you enjoy my paintings as they hang on your cherished walls
