Colours of South Uist was created during a late-autumn journey to the Outer Hebrides, looking towards South Uist beneath one of those extraordinary skies that seem to belong to the islands.

I travelled to Harris in November, a time of year I particularly love for photography. The days are short and the weather rarely stays still. Rain moves across the sea, clouds gather and disappear, and suddenly a shaft of sunlight breaks through and completely transforms the landscape.

That was what happened here. Beneath a deep indigo and blue-black sky, sunlight swept across the distant crofts and pale shoreline, illuminating them almost theatrically against the approaching rain. In the foreground, the shallow Hebridean water shifts through turquoise, teal and green, while touches of lilac, blue and warm silver appear where the light catches the sand.

It reminded me of light passing through a prism — a seemingly simple moment breaking into an unexpected spectrum of colour.

I love the contradiction within this photograph: darkness and light, storm and stillness, the intensity of the sky against the delicacy of the shore. The tiny white houses in the distance give a sense of scale and human presence, yet the landscape remains wonderfully spacious and remote.

At large scale, Colours of South Uist becomes almost a window onto the Hebrides, with the dark sky creating a dramatic counterpoint to the luminous sand and jewel-like sea.

About My Work

My work is created on the Isle of Skye and throughout the Scottish Highlands and Islands, inspired by the shifting relationship between sea, land, weather and light. I use long exposure, intentional camera movement and other in-camera techniques to soften the boundaries between photography and painting, creating atmospheric landscapes that are intended to be felt as much as seen.

Each artwork is produced using carefully selected archival fine art papers or museum-quality canvas and professional pigment inks, chosen for their beautiful surface, tonal depth and longevity. Bespoke sizes are available for collectors, interior designers and larger architectural spaces.
