Tiresias (2018) Original Oil Painting by Nicolas Maureau

A body caught between two states, neither one settled yet: Tiresias, from the Scènes de Genre series, draws on the myth of the seer who lived through two metamorphoses, once into a woman, once back into a man, becoming the only figure in Greek mythology to know both sides of desire from the inside.

The series treats gender as something built rather than fixed, and Tiresias is close to its founding myth, a body that doesn't borrow from the other side but crosses into it completely, twice. Rather than showing either transformation as an event, the painting holds the figure mid-change, the threshold itself rather than a before or after.

What remains is proof, almost mythological in its own right, that the line between genders was never as solid as it's usually made to look.
