The Distance Between Lights (2026) Original Acrylic Painting by Svitlana Zezekalo

80 x 60 x 1cm (unframed)

$671.28

The Distance Between Lights is a contemporary night harbour painting from my Architecture of Memory series. Boats, waterfront architecture and distant lights emerge from the darkness, while their fragmented reflections dissolve into the water.
Inspired by the atmosphere of the Adriatic coast at night, the painting is not intended as a literal depiction of a specific harbour. I use the coastal landscape as a structure through which to explore memory, distance and the way familiar places become fragmented over time.
Painted in acrylic on black canvas, the work combines expressive, gestural marks with recognizable architectural and maritime forms. Large areas of the black ground remain visible and become an active part of the composition, allowing boats, buildings and reflections to emerge from and disappear into darkness.
Warm ochre and muted golden tones create a quiet Mediterranean night atmosphere, while traces of light across the water suggest a place remembered rather than precisely observed.
