In The Blue Robe, I continue my ongoing investigation into the psychology of looking.
A sense of profound stillness unfolds as a man stands captivated by the poetic elegance of a piece by Will Barnet. He was an American master and one of my personal favorites, Barnet beautifully bridged abstract design with realistic, dreamlike human emotion—capturing quiet moments of meditation, nature, and family relationships.
He spoke often about the spiritual nature of art, the importance of staying true to one's creative vision, and the freedom that comes with aging and longevity. “The Old Masters are still alive after 400 years,” he said, “and that's what I want to be.” Live on he does.
