Sunny Sardines (2025) Original Oil Painting by Tetiana Surshko

60 x 80 x 1cm (unframed) / 60 x 80cm (actual image size)

$1,712.89

Two sardines swim across a field of pure lemon yellow, so close that their heads fill the whole canvas. Each fish is painted with a few bold palette knife strokes: sky blue and cobalt on the back, orange, scarlet and gold on the cheeks and gills, a stripe of green along the belly, and a large round eye with a black pupil and a white glint that looks straight at you. Sunny Sardines is an expressionist, almost pop art painting about the simplest summer pleasure, fresh fish and strong sun.

The painting belongs to my Fantasy Dreamscapes series, where ordinary things are shown the way they feel rather than the way they look. I live in Lisbon, and sardines here are a whole culture: June festivals, smoke from the grills on every corner, bright paper garlands over the streets. I wanted that joy in one image, with no plate, no table and no shadows, just two fish, colour and light.

The canvas is 60 x 80 cm (about 23.6 x 31.5 inches) in portrait format. It is made for a kitchen or dining room, a seafood restaurant, a beach house or a bright hallway, and it brings a lot of energy to a white or grey wall. On a dark wall the yellow glows like a lamp.

It is painted in oil on stretched cotton canvas with a palette knife. The yellow background is laid in smooth even layers, and the fish are built on top in thick impasto strokes, so the colour has real relief and catches the light. The painting is signed, varnished for protection, and the sides are painted, so it is ready to hang with no frame needed.

It ships stretched on its wooden bars in a sturdy protective box, never rolled, by tracked and insured courier from Lisbon, Portugal, usually within 3 to 5 working days. Keep it out of direct sunlight and dust gently with a soft dry cloth. If you would like more photos, a close-up of the knife work or a view in a room setting, send me a message and I will be glad to help.

About
Colour is the engine of everything I paint. I'm drawn to the moment when an ordinary thing turns intense — a bouquet that burns like fire, a wave a second... Read more
