Sonya (2023) Original Mixed-media Sculpture by Nicol Vacaru

Sonya is an original handmade string art portrait created with black thread and nails on a prepared wooden surface.

Instead of drawing the face with pencil or ink, I built it gradually by wrapping thread from nail to nail, using the direction and density of the lines to create light, shadow and facial expression.

Thousands of intersecting threads form the portrait, with some areas remaining open and others becoming increasingly dense. The image changes depending on how closely it is viewed — from a distance the face feels complete, while up close the construction and individual lines become part of the experience.

The background was prepared to add warmth and texture, creating a softer contrast with the black thread.
