Original artwork description
I almost never finish a drawing. That's the point.
The first minutes with a model are the truest ones. The line is quick, the proportions haven't been corrected yet, and the page is still alive. When I turn a sketch like this into a large painting, the lightness is the first thing to go. So I draw straight onto watercolor paper and stop while it's still breathing.
Here, a seated nude, folded in on herself. One blue watercolor pencil line, then water and pigment left to run where they want. Grey-blue holds the weight of the body, a breath of yellow warms her hair, a pink bloom sits where the light touches skin. The line carves out the form, and the proportions bend: a shoulder grows, a knee shifts, because I'm drawing what I felt in the room, not what a camera would see.
This is not a portrait. I'm not after who she is. I'm after the quiet in the pose and the mystery a body always keeps, however long you look.
At 22.9 × 30.5 cm, it's a small work, and I love that about it. Small pictures aren't made for a crowded wall. They belong to the corner you actually look at: above a desk, beside a bed, on the shelf you pass every morning. A piece you notice on the fifth day, and again on the fiftieth.
She keeps her secret, and you'll keep looking.
