There is a kind of strength that never raises its voice, and that's what I wanted this painting to hold. It simply stays, light, unresisting, present.
This one isn't really about blooming. It's about the weightlessness that comes just before anything is decided.
Two arcs of branches open from the corners of the canvas, carrying small roses in white and blush pink, and between them I left the linen bare, breathing, untouched. Nothing here pushes to fill the space. The petals seem to hover rather than rest on the branch, as if a breath could move them. Even the green behind them is soft and unfocused, more felt than seen, so the flowers read as fragile against it, almost weightless.
This tenderness isn't an accident of technique. It's close to what I keep returning to in my own practice: that softness isn't the opposite of strength, it's simply strength that has nothing left to prove.
I don't want this painting filled in by the eye. I want it allowed its own unhurried pace, the same pace at which I made it.
