I wanted to capture the distinctive life of the Hawaiian Paniolo, riding into the surf and guiding cattle through the coastal waters. I used the horses, cattle, ropes, and breaking waves to create a strong horizontal movement across the composition, while the distant mountains, tropical shoreline, and sailing vessel add depth and a sense of place. Bright ocean blues and greens contrast with warm sunlit tones, while energetic, simplified brushwork conveys splashing water, wet horses, and the movement of the riders, giving the scene both historical character and a vivid sense of sunlight, sea air, and life.
