Original artwork description
A palimpsest is a manuscript scraped clean and written over, with the earlier text still faintly showing through. Here the layers are wood. Salvaged planks, with their nail holes, splits and worn edges intact, stack upward in oxblood, navy, white and weathered brown, and each one carries the traces of a former life. Over them, panels of gold and copper leaf catch the light, and thin black rods cross the whole surface like ruled lines on a page. Small cubes of red, navy and gold float free at the margins, like notes in the border.
The composition rises like a vertical city, dense and layered at its centre and opening into space at its edges. What was used before is not hidden but written over, so the old and the new read together.
