oblique relaxation (2025) Photograph by Daniel Fontaine

43.2 x 63.5 x 0.17cm (unframed) / 33.5 x 59.5cm (actual image size)

$350

Over the course of several days and at various times, I stepped out onto the small balcony of my hostel room in Barcelona, hoping to capture an image from that elevated vantage point. Nothing interesting came of those sessions—until the day I turned my gaze to where I was standing, and—bingo!

A sepia-toned, high-angle shot captures a weathered wooden chair placed on a tiled patio. Dramatic striped shadows, from an unseen guardrail, diagonally traverse the scene, creating a strong contrast between light and dark. To the left, a dark wooden shutter is visible, casting a sharp shadow. In the foreground, a small potted plant with tiny flowers sits on the tiles, also partially shaded. The overall mood is quiet and contemplative, with a vintage aesthetic enhanced by the monochromatic color palette and textured details of the aged wood and tiles.

Printed on 100% cotton paper—free of acid and optical brighteners (Fine Art print)—using pigment-based inks. The paper measures 43.2 cm by 63.5 cm, and the image measures 33.5 cm by 59.5 cm. Consequently, the image is surrounded by a margin.
