Nightwalk II (2021) Bronze sculpture by Philip Hearsey

There is no need for a detailed description as the title presents sufficient clue to the inspiration and emotional importance to the artist. Anybody coming across this sculpture can add their own memories, stories, emotions and interpretation. In this way the sculpture becomes personal and meaningful to that person alone.
A cast bronze disc, its outer rim asymmetric — finely rubbed and finished with a translucent golden brown patination that allows the natural bronze to show through. The face within is deep blue, the surface richly varied in tone and texture, pulling the eye toward an aperture that is not quite circular, its edge irregular and frayed.
At the aperture's edge, the natural bronze is exposed on the highlights, the blue giving way to bare metal where the surface catches the light.
It stands and rotates freely on a solid oak base, the grain of the wood a contrast to the metal above it. Each turn offers a slightly different relationship between the piece and the light.
There are countless opportunities to refresh the aspect. Either at an angle to catch a particular light or individual preference for a side where the position of the circular aperture pleases.
