The third and deepest painting in my Midnight series.
The hydrangeas I paint come from the mountains of northern Bali, where I took several vipassana meditation courses. In this practice, meditators observe "anicca" — a fundamental concept in Buddhism. In Pali, anicca means impermanence: nothing stays still, everything is always changing, arising and passing away.
The first Midnight painting was all blue against near-black. The second added white. This third one goes the other way — no white at all, only cobalt, indigo, violet and periwinkle, pressed together on a near-black ground. It's the most saturated, most sculptural piece in the trio: the petals stand in thick, almost bas-relief peaks of oil, catching light differently from every angle.
This artwork is part of the limited series "Balinese Hydrangeas" — 12 works.
Oil on cotton canvas, built with palette knife, dark green leaves framing the bouquet. The sides of the canvas are painted in the background color — ready to hang as it is, no frame needed.
The 30 × 30 cm square works on a focused wall: a console, a reading shelf, a hallway niche, a moody corner — or as the third piece in a small Midnight grouping. The palette pairs with dark walls, navy, brass, deep green and warm wood interiors.
