Memory Run (Gedächtnislauf) (2019) Original Acrylic Painting by Ralf Schmidt

For me, “Memory Run II” explores the question of how deeply our past remains a part of us. The figure moves forward with great dynamism, yet its exposed brain reveals what is otherwise invisible: the memories, experiences, and events we carry within us.
You can leave a place, start a new chapter in life, or try to leave something behind—but you still carry your own past with you. It accompanies us, influences our decisions, and shapes who we have become. Some memories are beautiful, others perhaps burdensome; some are consciously present, and others long forgotten. And yet they all belong to our personal history.
For me, the running figure is therefore also a symbol of life moving forward: We are constantly moving ahead, but we never do so completely detached from what lies behind us. The brain on the back makes visible what is always invisibly with us—our past.
