meet (2025) Original Mixed-media Painting by joon hwan kim

95 x 65 x 4cm (framed)

$3,000

Gyeongbokgung Palace was one of the first places I visited with my son after he was born.
It was the royal palace of the Joseon Dynasty, which made Seoul its capital for more than 500 years. In this painting, I imagined a family dressed in beautiful hanbok, enjoying a happy moment together at the palace.

The child is a toothbrush robot, the mother is a coffee-pot robot, and the father is an old kettle robot.

My parents were poor pottery merchants, and when I was a child, pots and kettles were like toys to me. They were ordinary objects, but they became part of my childhood memories.

As I grew older and started my own family, I began to think about what kind of father I wanted to be remembered as by my son. I wanted to become a strong and wonderful father in his eyes. So I created the father as a tin robot carrying an old kettle—an object that was so familiar to me from my childhood.

In reality, my father is now ill and no longer as strong as he once was. But in this painting, I can see him as a healthy, strong father once again.

This work is not simply a painting of a family at Gyeongbokgung Palace. It is a painting about childhood memories, family, and the father I hope my son will remember.
