Meet – Bulguksa

This work portrays the beautiful landscape of Bulguksa Temple, a thousand-year-old Buddhist temple in Gyeongju, Korea, through a combination of traditional Korean ink painting and oil painting. The subtle and atmospheric quality of ink harmonizes with the delicately rendered trees in the foreground.

The two trees, standing close together yet possessing distinctly different forms and characters, reminded me of Seokgatap and Dabotap, the two iconic stone pagodas of Bulguksa. Though different in appearance, they create a sense of harmony—an idea that guided the creation of this work.

Through the balance of ink and oil, and the harmony between the two contrasting trees, I sought to capture the timeless beauty and quiet spirit of Bulguksa.
