This painting holds one particular moment — the in-between one.
The hydrangeas I paint come from the mountains of northern Bali, where I took several vipassana meditation courses. In this practice, meditators observe "anicca" — a fundamental concept in Buddhism. In Pali, anicca means impermanence: nothing stays still, everything is always changing, arising and passing away.
I brought a young hydrangea plant from those mountains to my studio in Ubud to paint from life. And the flowers kept changing color — from violet toward blue, day by day. Lavender Hydrangea is the middle of that journey: the petals here are no longer violet, but not yet blue. Lavender, periwinkle, soft ivory — the color of change itself.
This artwork is part of the limited series "Balinese Hydrangeas" — 12 works.
Oil on cotton canvas, built with palette knife. It's a close-up composition — the petals fill the canvas edge to edge, standing off the surface in real peaks of paint, with only glimpses of the dark background between them. The sides of the canvas are painted so the composition continues around the edge — ready to hang as it is, no frame needed.
The 30 × 30 cm square works on a focused wall: a console table, a reading shelf, a kitchen alcove, the space beside a doorway — or in a small grouping with other works from the series. The soft purple-blue palette pairs beautifully with white, cream, grey, lilac and warm wood interiors.
