Lavender Field (2021) Original Acrylic Painting by Galina Zimmatore

Lavender Field is an original semi-abstract landscape painting inspired by the colour, atmosphere and quiet beauty of lavender growing in the English countryside.

Rather than painting a literal field of flowers, I wanted to capture the feeling of lavender — its cool violet and blue tones, the changing light and the sense of calm that surrounds it in the landscape.

I built the painting through many layers, using acrylic paint, charcoal, pencil, spray paint and stencil work. I also sanded back areas of the surface between stages, allowing earlier colours and marks to reappear and creating depth, texture and a sense of movement.

The work is painted on a wooden panel, and the combination of layered colour, exposed marks and textured surfaces allows the landscape to move between recognisable forms and abstraction.

The painting is presented unframed, allowing the substantial wooden support to remain part of its character.
