Grit and Glory (2026) Original Acrylic Painting by Paul Cheng

I wanted to capture the most explosive moment of a cowboy riding a bucking horse—a moment when man and animal struggle against each other while maintaining a delicate balance. I intentionally simplified the background so the cowboy and horse dominate the composition, using the open blue sky and rising dust to heighten their power and movement. With energetic, broken, directional brushstrokes, I shaped the horse’s muscular motion, the cowboy’s clothing, and the swinging reins. Strong contrasts of light and shadow, warm earth tones against cool blues, and scattered paint marks convey speed, dust, and the raw freedom of the American West.
