Painted with thick impasto this painting is based on one of Rembrandts portraits of gentlemen. This is not a copy but is a exercise in using bold brushstrokes to achieve a certain look.

I adore Rembrandt, I believe him to be a "painters painter" and like him I love the materials of oil paint, the way it looks the effects you can achieve and the colours.

The painting was achieved in various layers...some layers actually being painted rather quickly to build up the image. It took a long time to come together because of the structure and drying times.
