Four Palms, Formentera

On the horizon of Formentera, four palm trees stand together on a low ridge of land, small against an open sky and a still, deep sea. The painting holds that quiet, suspended feeling of looking out across the water on a clear Balearic day, when the island seems to float between two blues.

The sky is painted in a soft, creamy cool blue that deepens gently towards the top of the panel, set against a rich, saturated sea. Between them, the distant hills are built up with a palette knife, leaving thick ridges of paint that catch the light and give the coastline a sculptural, almost tactile presence. The contrast between the smooth fields of colour and the textured horizon draws the eye straight to the heart of the scene: four small trees, far away.
