A dark beach at the last minute of sunset, when the sky splits into a band of fire. Heavy clouds in black and deep green hang over a low coast, a strip of scarlet, orange and yellow burns between them and the hills, and the wet sand picks up that light and carries it down the whole canvas as a glowing path. On the left the surf rolls in, thick white foam over deep blue water, painted in rough impasto strokes that almost stand off the surface. Fiery Sunset Coast is an expressionist seascape about contrast: cold water against hot sky, darkness against one line of light.

The painting belongs to my Living Water series, where I paint water in all its moods. This is the dramatic one. I see sunsets like this over the Atlantic from Lisbon on autumn evenings, when the clouds close in and the sun escapes for a moment under their edge. I wanted that single moment, not the whole view.

The canvas is 60 x 80 cm (about 23.6 x 31.5 inches) in portrait format. The dark palette with a hot accent suits a living room, a bedroom, a study or a hallway in a modern interior, and it looks strongest on a white or light grey wall where the fire line and the foam stand out.

It is painted in oil on stretched cotton canvas. The sky and the wet sand are laid in long blended strokes, the reflection is pulled down with a dry brush, and the foam is built in thick white impasto with a palette knife, so the wave has real relief and catches the light. The painting is signed, varnished for protection, and the sides are painted, so it is ready to hang with no frame needed.

It ships stretched on its wooden bars in a sturdy protective box, never rolled, by tracked and insured courier from Lisbon, Portugal, usually within 3 to 5 working days. Keep it out of direct sunlight and dust gently with a soft dry cloth.

Colour is the engine of everything I paint. I'm drawn to the moment when an ordinary thing turns intense — a bouquet that burns like fire, a wave a second... Read more
