Original artwork description
A fruit torn open, its seeds catching light like glass or shrapnel, held by a woman in a military green t-shirt: Woman with a Pomegranate takes Murillo's Melon and Grape Eater as a starting point and replaces its quiet domestic pleasure with something far less settled.
In French the title carries a pun English can't quite hold onto, grenade meaning both pomegranate and the weapon, one letter away from becoming the other. The painting keeps that doubling anyway. Fertility and violence sit inside the same object here, sensuality and threat close enough to be mistaken for each other, and the woman's stillness gives nothing away about which one she's holding.
Against the black background, no action, no gesture beyond simply holding it, only the after, the moment a danger has already been absorbed rather than released.
