Drifting Walls is a contemporary architectural painting from the Architecture of Memory series, exploring how familiar structures shift and fragment when reconstructed through memory.
Architectural forms emerge from a dark ground, overlapping and dissolving into one another. Walls, façades and passages remain recognizable, yet their boundaries are deliberately unstable, creating the impression of a place caught between physical presence and recollection.
Expressive brushwork, spontaneous lines and areas of exposed dark canvas disrupt the geometry of the architecture. Rather than describing a specific location, the painting captures fragments of spatial experience - the memory of a wall, an opening, a turn in a street - gradually detached from their original surroundings.
The title Drifting Walls reflects this sense of movement. Architecture, usually associated with permanence and stability, becomes fluid: structures shift, disappear and reappear as memory continually reconstructs the places we once knew.
Part of Svitlana Zezekalo’s ongoing Architecture of Memory series, the work considers how built spaces can remain present long after their precise details have faded.
