Crowned by Light is an original large lion portrait by award-winning wildlife artist Deimante Bruzguliene, created in soft pastel and metallic gold acrylic. Combining highly detailed realism with expressive contemporary mark-making, the artwork captures the lion's strength, dignity and quiet authority.
The lion's face is rendered with great care in soft pastel, with particular attention to the eyes, expression and fine textures of the fur. In contrast, the mane develops into bold, flowing passages of gold acrylic, creating a dramatic transition between realism and abstraction.
I wanted the gold to suggest more than the natural colour of the mane. Against the deep black background, it becomes almost a crown of light - a visual expression of inner strength, resilience and calm power.
The contrast between the carefully observed face and spontaneous metallic brushwork gives the artwork a different character depending on the light and viewing distance. From close up, individual pastel marks and textures become visible; from across a room, the golden mane creates a powerful, luminous presence against the dark ground.
Crowned by Light is part of my ongoing exploration of wildlife portraiture - capturing not only the physical beauty of animals, but also their character, presence and the emotions they evoke.
