Black Spray #1
South Cornwall. Winter, 2015.
The Atlantic is doing what it does.
One wave. That's all. Rising out of a dark, restless sea, white water exploding at its crest, the whole force of the ocean concentrated into a single moment — and then gone.
I surf this coast, so I spend a lot of time watching the sea. You start to recognise how a wave builds, how it travels and what it means when the swell looks like this. Every wave that breaks has travelled a long way to reach this point. Then, in a few seconds, all that energy is spent.
I was drawn to the contrast between the dark water and the white spray, and to the way the wave seems to rise out of the heavy winter sky. There's very little else in the frame. Just water, weather and light.
I like that simplicity. You don't need a complicated scene when the ocean is doing something like this.
Photographed on my Leica M10 in winter 2015. The image is full frame, never cropped, exactly as I saw it.
