There are places where time seems to stand still. Before Memory Began captures the ancient Atlantic shoreline at Birsay in the Orkney Islands, where dramatic layers of rock reach into the sea, shaped by millions of years of geological history.

I was drawn to the contrast between the enduring stone and the restless movement of the ocean. Using long exposure photography, I softened the waves into a delicate mist, creating an almost painterly landscape of turquoise, muted gold, warm sand and soft grey.

There is something deeply reassuring about these timeless shores. Long before our memories began, the tides were rising and falling against these rocks. I wanted to capture that quiet sense of eternity.
