Apples (2013) Original Mixed-media Painting by Abi Moffat

51.97 x 62.99 x 1.38" (unframed)

$4,270.96

An original abstract mixed-media painting that offers a contemporary twist on the traditional still life, depicting two abstracted apples through bold shapes, expressive marks and a dramatic contrast of colour.
Rich reds, fiery oranges and golden ochres form the central shapes, with flashes of green and darker tones adding depth and complexity. These vibrant colours are set against an expansive white ground, allowing the forms to stand out dramatically against the surrounding space. A deep Prussian blue dominates the upper portion of the composition, creating a powerful contrast with the warmth of the apples and bringing a sense of tension and balance to the painting.
Created using acrylic paint, emulsion, household gloss and varnish. This experimental mixed-media artwork uses simplified forms, which move away from traditional representation, capturing the essence of the still life through colour, shape and composition rather than realistic detail.

The painting was created during the final year of my BA at Leeds Arts University, as part of a body of work exploring three traditional artistic subjects: still life, portraiture and landscape. Throughout this collection, I reinterpreted these familiar genres through abstraction and an experimental approach to materials, creating a contemporary dialogue with traditional painting.

Materials used:

Acrylic, household paint, gloss paint and varnish on canvas
