A piece of classic Arizona roadside history, captured in timeless black and white.

I photographed the Apache Lodge in Prescott, Arizona, drawn to its wonderful vintage character and the unmistakable look of an old American roadside motel. Removing the colour gives the image a completely different atmosphere, bringing the architecture, signage and details to the foreground and creating a photograph that could almost have been taken decades ago.

The square composition gives the artwork a strong, clean presence, while the monochrome finish makes it easy to display in both contemporary and traditional interiors.

For me, places like the Apache Lodge are part of what makes travelling through Arizona so fascinating. Beyond the famous landscapes are old motels, signs and roadside buildings that tell their own story of American travel.
