A woman in a white bonnet leans toward a small blue-green creature — a goat, perhaps, or something that has simply decided to be one. Their noses almost touch. Their eyes are locked. Something is being said, or understood, that requires no words.

There is a long tradition in painting of women and animals sharing a quiet world apart from the larger human noise. I painted this one in the blues and silvers of a garden at dusk, where the foliage presses in on all sides and the only thing that matters is this small, serious exchange between two creatures who have clearly known each other for some time.
