Yosemite Red

Yosemite, California. Late evening, August 2003.

The day was almost done.

Woodsmoke from the controlled burns was drifting through the pine trees. The sky had turned that deep, extraordinary teal, bleeding into warm amber along the horizon. Through the dark silhouettes of the trees, one last red peak caught the fading light.

I remember sitting with this for a while. There was no rush to get anywhere, nothing I needed to do. I had my Hasselblad, the landscape in front of me, and this extraordinary light unfolding above the valley.

I love those moments when a place you've been looking at all day suddenly becomes something completely different. The light changes, the colours deepen, and you realise you need to stop and pay attention.

The square format felt right for this photograph. The dark trees anchor the frame, while the sky opens up above them. You can see the grain of the medium-format film in the print, which I think adds to the atmosphere.

Photographed on my Hasselblad using Kodak film in August 2003. Full frame, never cropped, exactly as I saw it.
