Horizontal Counterpoint (2026) Original Mixed-media Painting by Charles BEALL

Ninety-six small bars run the full width of the panel, standing shoulder to shoulder with a dark gap between each. No two are the same colour: ochres, oxbloods, greens, greys and blues, with single bars faced in silver, gold and copper leaf falling at intervals along the run.

Behind them the ground is quartered — raw pine at upper left and lower right, deep navy in the opposing corners — so the same sequence of bars reads against wood at one end and against blue at the other. A white batten runs above the rank, giving it a rail to stand on.

Two systems run at once and neither yields to the other. That is what the title means.

Acrylic, metal leaf and wood on wood panel. 12 × 48 in. Signed. Ready to hang.

Materials used:

Acrylic, Wood, Gold Leaf
