    ABOUT ME

I paint landscapes of the heart.

Some people love to travel, to go on epic journeys, quests, pilgrimages. They travel to find themselves. They travel to lose themselves.

I do the same, with paint and brush and canvas. I paint to find myself. I paint to lose myself.

Every canvas takes me on a journey. Nothing is planned, there are no inevitables or preconceptions. The boundaries are fluid, and the possibilities endless. Having started with no destination in mind, the place that the painting arrives at is always unexpected, and that entrances me. It is a place governed by intuition, rather than intellect, the heart, not the head.

My canvas is a portal into another world.

It’s like stepping into a mirror world for me. Everything is back to front. I am not an explorer in the real world. I am not particularly courageous, adventurous, or free. I like things to be orderly and controlled and familiar.

This is the real world me.

Or is it?  Who is to say which one the real world is, the world of the head, or the world of the heart? Perhaps the place where we lose ourselves is always the true one, and in losing ourselves there, we find ourselves at last.

    MY PROCESS

My painting style is abstract expressionism. Every painting begins with letting go. Letting go of preconceived ideas, letting go of fear, letting go of the need to control, letting go of everything. That's the place where the magic starts. As the painting builds itself, each layer of colour and texture informs the next layer, and there is a visible push-pull between the chaos of the process, and the control of the artist.

I am proud to be a self-taught artist, with a background in textiles and fashion, and that feeds into my paintings, which are characterised by a bold and intuitive use of colour. I live and work within a stone's throw of the sea, in beautiful wild Wales.
